5 Signs to Replace Your AC

An older or faulty air conditioner might struggle to keep rooms cold and can make your home uncomfortable. Consider upgrading your cooling system if repair costs are high and replacement parts are hard to find.

Signs you need a new air conditioner include:

  • Leaks: If your outdoor unit is leaking liquid, you likely have a refrigerant issue on your hands.
  • Short-cycling: An air conditioning system that frequently turns on and off is inefficient and straining to work effectively.
  • Rust: Corrosion and rust often doom an air conditioner. Repairs are not typically possible in this case.
  • Excess humidity: Consider upgrading your AC if your current system fails to provide consistent comfort throughout your space.
  • Increased energy bills: If you’ve noticed a sudden spike in your energy costs in the summer, your air conditioning might be the cause! A professional investigation can determine if AC replacement would help you save money each month.

NEW CARRIER® DUCTLESS AIR CONDITIONER INSTALLATION SERVICE

A ductless air conditioning system is almost the same as central air conditioners in a way that they both have two units. The first one is a condenser, which remains outside your home and the other is the air handler, or the evaporator, which is placed within a room in your home. You can get a ductless air conditioner wall unit, but these systems can offer more discrete options for being set in the floor or ceiling of a room. Another great benefit to these systems is their compact size and minimal installation makes it possible to take them with you if you ever were to move from the location where you installed your ductless AC. This makes ductless a semi-portable air conditioning solution.

CARRIER® HEAT PUMPS

Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling for your home. The unique, variable-speed compressor of this unit provides only the amount of hot or cold air that your home needs – which means no wasted energy or skyrocketing utility bills. Additionally, Carrier® heat pumps are designed to operate quietly, so you can enjoy the silence in your home all year long!

GEOTHERMAL COOLING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SERVICE

Geothermal systems have been an increasingly popular option for both home and business owners across Pittsburgh and the western Pennsylvania region. These energy-efficient systems provide both heating and cooling at an affordable cost, operating on electricity but also making use of the earth’s thermal energy. The system pre-conditions the system’s refrigerant to heat and cool your home. No matter how extreme the weather turns, you can enjoy perfect temperature control with a geothermal HVAC system from Wade Heating, Cooling, and Geothermal.

How to prepare for your new AC installation

1. Clear the Way!

Keep a clear path to where the AC installation service crew will be working. We need as much space as possible to work in where we will be installing the components of your new air conditioner. Cleaning the pathway to the installation locations can help speed up the installation process. It also makes the area safer for us to work in if you remove all potential tripping hazards. If it is necessary for us to travel through narrow hallways or spaces to install the air conditioner, remove any objects in the path or pictures on the walls.

2. Be There

If possible, free up your schedule to be sure you can be available during the times your AC installation is being performed. The job can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days. You will not need to do any part of the installation, but it is still best to be available during all parts of the air conditioner installation process. This will also allow our installers an opportunity to give you a tour of your new ductless system and offer you pointers on how to operate it best. Speak with us about scheduling the installation according to the times that will work best for you.

3. Think Ahead

You can ensure the temperature in your home is at an ideal temperature for comfort and energy efficiency, even when you are away, with a programmable thermostat. Be sure to ask about the thermostat that your new AC system includes, and find out about the Wi-Fi programmable thermostat options we have available that will allow you to control your home temperature from an app on your cell phone. Call 412-787-1341 to learn about the options we have available.

Steps to Installing an Air Conditioner

Once you have decided on which air conditioner you will be purchasing, one of our air conditioner specialists will come to your home to conduct a pre-installation evaluation to determine how to best install your new AC system. These are the steps the installation professional will follow.

1. Find a location that will have enough room for the AC unit’s clearance and ventilation specifications.

2. Evaluate for possible safety hazards, such as areas prone to flood water collection or overexposure to dirt, grime, grease, or anything else that could inadvertently catch on fire.

3. Ensure the location will be able to hook up to the ductwork, drain, pipes, electric supply, and gas supply.

4. Once the best location has been determined for everything, our air conditioner installation service crew will install the ductwork system, vent pipes, electric supplies, and condensate drain your system will require.

5. Finally, the foundation for installation has been completed, all that is left to do is install your new air conditioner.

Air Conditioning FAQs

1. In terms of seasonal sales and discounts that HVAC dealers offer, the best months to buy an air conditioner are the Spring and Fall. Here at Wade Heating & Cooling, we always strive to provide a fair price, no matter the time of year. That said, we do offer special financing, subject to approved credit, and cash-off specials during different times of the year. Be sure to check out the current offers that we have available.

2. If you are using window air conditioners to cool three or more rooms at a time in your home, then opting to install a central air cooling system would be a cheaper air conditioning option for you to switch to in terms of energy efficiency. Central air cooling will allow you to provide a more optimal air distribution throughout your home while also saving you money on your energy use.

The cost of an air conditioner can vary depending on the size you require and the type of cooling technology you choose to install. They can cost anywhere from a few thousand, to many thousands, of dollars.

Air conditioners use British Thermal Units (BTUs) to demonstrate the power capability of the system. 1 BTU is roughly enough power to cool every 400 sq. ft. of your home. For central air AC systems, divide the number of square feet in your home by 400 to get a rough estimate of the BTU power from the air conditioner you choose to purchase.

It is not bad at all to use a fan when you have your central air on. In fact, using a fan with your central air will help increase your home’s cooling in the summer and help to free your air conditioner from running more than it has to to keep your home cool.

When buying an air conditioner, there is more to think about than just the potential AC system’s price and cooling capacity. You will also want to consider the following:

ENERGY RATING:

Check the EER (Energy Efficiency Rating) of any air conditioner that you are considering. This is an energy-rating label from the BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency). It uses stars on the label to designate energy efficiency, the more stars you see the better the energy efficiency of the AC system you are considering. Finding a system with a high-efficiency rating will save you significant amounts of money on your monthly utility bills. If you think your current AC system might be putting a drain on your energy bill, schedule to have a home energy audit performed on your home by a professional to find out for sure.

TECHNOLOGY TYPE:

The type of air conditioner technology you choose, be it geothermal, ductless, or traditional air conditioning, can have different benefits and disadvantages from one another. Be sure to have a good understanding of the types of systems available by speaking to one of our AC installation service specialists today.

AIR FILTER:

Since the air you are breathing will be passing through the cooling system you purchase, for the health of you and your family, you will want to be sure you choose an air conditioner that comes with a good-quality air filter. The filter should be effective at removing smoke, germs, and odors from your home’s air. A well-designed air conditioner air filter can clean the air that passes through it while also preventing the evaporator coil from choking due to excessive dust exposure.

CAPABILITY:

The size of your home and the areas you want to keep cool will help give you an indication of the air conditioner output capability to keep in mind when choosing a new AC system.

NOISE LEVEL:

Air conditioners can be noisy; luckily you can find the operating noise level of any AC system you are considering by checking the product specifications. 50dB or less is the ideal sound range for an air conditioner.

UNIQUE FEATURES:

Some systems have unique high-tech capabilities that are worth being aware of. Such as inverter technology that will provide exceptional consistent cooling while using a third of the amount of energy of a system not equipped with inverter technology. Another great high-tech option available is called air swing. When an air conditioner lists air swing as one of its capabilities, it means that the AC system is capable of distributing airflow in different directions to best cool a room.

WARRANTY:

Find out what the warranty is on an air conditioner before you buy one. You will want to know how long it is valid for and what it covers.

OTHER FEATURES:

See what the AC system you are considering is capable of. There are many features that an air conditioner can come with, so you will want to learn about and understand any feature of the AC system that you are considering purchasing is capable of. Air conditioners can come with dehumidification capabilities that will keep your home dry and help prevent mold growth, even when there is a lot of moisture in the air. Some come with sleep functions to reduce energy usage during the night. Modern air conditioners even can come with self-cleaning modes that help reduce bacteria growth to cleaner safer air.
