How To: Troubleshoot Furnace Problems in Your Home
Geothermal heat pumps are exceptionally durable with a high level of reliability versus standard forced air gas furnaces. However, this energy-efficient technology can still experience issues.
Regular maintenance with a geothermal tune-up performed by an experienced repair technician, like Wade Heating and Cooling, is crucial to prevent an issue before it happens.
If your heat pump is not turning on or unable to properly heat or cool your home, you can try some of these troubleshooting steps to fix your system.
1) Check your thermostat settings and be sure the temperature is appropriately set for the current outdoor temperature.
2) Check your circuit breaker for blown fuses & make sure the indoor and outdoor system switches are on.
3) Geothermal systems are designed with a lock out function if it is unable to resolve an internal issue. While locked out, it will still provide emergency heating. This may have been caused by a minor glitch, you can try to reset a geothermal system to clear the lockout when this happens. But if your system keeps getting locked, you will need to have a service professional come perform a diagnostic check.
4) Make sure your air filter is clean enough not to clog your system’s airflow.
5) Be sure the fan is turned on to the auto setting to work with your heat pump while it heats and cools your home. This will also increase the energy efficiency of your geothermal system.
6) Closed air registers will block airflow, and prevent your heat pump from heating or cooling your home. Be sure all air grills and registers are open throughout your home.
When to Call a Geothermal Repair Service Professional
If you observe unusual signs, odors, sounds, or other behavior from your heat pump, then your system could be trying to tell you that it is malfunctioning.
Signs & Symptoms of a Broken Geothermal System
PROBLEM: INCREASED ENERGY BILLS
CAUSE:
Geothermal systems are designed to be energy efficient and should not cause fluctuations in energy costs like traditional HVAC systems. If your electric bill seems abnormally high and you can not account for the spike in energy use, then your geothermal system may be malfunctioning. Have one of our knowledgeable heat pump service technicians come and evaluate your system’s parts and electrical connections to resolve an issue with excessive energy use.
PROBLEM: SCALE BUILD-UP
CAUSE:
With geothermal systems that use water to transfer heat, scale build-up can occur when hard water is flowing through your ground loops. The high level of calcium in hard water will cause a build-up over time of calcified minerals in the ground loops. Schedule to have a geothermal repair technician perform an acid flush to resolve this.
