How To: Troubleshoot Air Conditioner Problems in Your Home

ISSUE: AC won’t turn on.
Typical Cause

Most likely if your air conditioner is not turning on it means that either your thermostat setting needs to be adjusted or is malfunctioning, an internal switch is turned off, or a circuit breaker or fuse has blown.

Troubleshooting Steps:
  • Ensure your AC’s source of power is functioning.
  • Try resetting the circuit breaker, or replace the fuse.
  • Make sure the thermostat is set to “Cool” and not to “Hot”.
  • Dump out excess water in the condensate trey that could be triggering a safety switch.
  • Check all the switches on your air conditioner and make sure they are all on.
  • Make sure the blower door is firmly closed on your air handler

If your AC is running, but the air is not cooling, then the refrigerant in your air conditioner may be low. If this is the case, you will need to schedule a professional air conditioning repairman to service your AC by recharging the refrigerant.

AC air not blowing could also be caused by a blockage somewhere in your AC’s system, which you may be able to resolve yourself.

This is typically caused by an air filter needing cleaned or replaced, or due to an issue in your ductwork. Ductwork is a sheet metal channel for your AC’s air flow. If there are any holes, disconnected parts, or other damage spots in your ductwork, it will have a negative impact on your central air conditioning’s ability to cool your home.

Sometimes you can locate an issue with your ductwork that is visibly accessible. However, if you are unable to locate the source of the AC airflow loss, you can call one of our air conditioning repair service technicians to do an in depth analysis of your ductwork to find and resolve the issue.

Troubleshooting Steps:
  • Check your filter and clean or replace it if dirty.
  • Check the ductwork throughout your home to be sure it has not become disconnected at any visible points.
  • Be sure that the register vents through your house are flipped open.
